How to find a song's BPM without weird apps

The simplest method to measure tempo by ear, and the most common mistake when doing it.

What knowing the BPM is for

Knowing a song's exact tempo helps you practice it with a metronome at the right speed, make clean transitions if you DJ, or simply note it down alongside the chords of a song you're learning.

The simplest method: tap the beat

No complex app needed — just listen to the song and tap the spacebar (or click) along with the kick drum or main pulse on the BPM counter. With 8 to 10 taps in a row, the result is already fairly accurate.

Watch out for double or half time

It's common to tap double the real tempo (tapping every eighth note instead of every quarter note) or half of it. If the number you get doesn't "feel" natural when counting the song out loud, try dividing or doubling it — it's the most common mistake when measuring BPM by ear.
